Villa Vajra was designed by the internationally acclaimed architect, Guy Morgan, this modern, spacious villa sleeps up to seven guests and offers the ultimate in luxurious accommodation within a totally private and exclusive, close-to-nature setting. The property and gardens are landscaped into the slopes of the steep valley, and the approach, via a raised wooden walkway through undisturbed rice fields, gives no clue to the remarkable design of the villa, or the breathtaking views of the jungle and river gorge.

3 Bedroom + study room = USD 380 (low season) | USD 420/460 (hi/peak season)
All rates are net / villa / night, inclusive of applicable government tax, service charge, refreshing welcome drink upon arrival, airport pick-up (one car-one way) and daily breakfast for 2 persons per room.

Constructed with high quality local materials including ‘alang alang’ thatch, Palimanan stone and teak wood; the property combines the very best of Balinese architectural elements with contemporary flair, elegant finishes and modern amenities. The villa presents a blend of outdoor living and air-conditioned comfort.

Villa Vajra is named after the quintessential symbol of Vajrayana Buddhism, a five-pronged ritual object often employed in conjunction with a bell. The Vajra is represented by a carving in a freestanding stone at the main entrance.

Every room and corner of the property has the effect of producing gasps of surprise and delight as guests view it for the first time. The villa is comprised of two buildings, linked on the upper level by a lotus pond and pergola. A serene Buddha statue stands within the lotus pond and white thunbergia cascades over the pergola-covered walkway leading to the Master Bedroom and Studio. The Master Bedroom is characterized by elegant furniture, teak floors, and glass on three sides to maximize the awesome views of the jungle and river valley. Sliding glass doors open on to a timber balcony, fringed by a food forest of fruit trees; the built-in bench seat is an ideal place to absorb the natural surroundings and listen to the ceaseless gurgle of the Ooz River as it coils its way through the deep gorge below. The en-suite garden bathroom is dominated by a large black terrazzo bathtub, creating a strong contrast against the white Palimanan stone floor. A black terrazzo wash stand supports a stylish chrome washbowl, and the shower is flanked by shelves and cabinets. Everything possible has been considered for the comfort of the guests; t he luxurious open-air bathtub is sheltered by a thatched canopy, and privacy is maintained by a wall. Wooden shutters, like hatches within the wall, can be opened to reveal a view of the ric e fields, and a larger hatch beside the bathtub offers the delightful alternative vista of the jungle. Tree ferns, birds’ nest ferns, and stepping stones across a star-grass lawn complete the natural décor of this charming garden bathroom.

Colourful local artwork adorns the walls of a passage way leading to the Studio on the same floor. Situated on the western side of the villa, this room boasts a panoramic view of the ric e fields, and features a pitched roof, a cream terrazzo floor and more built-in cupboards and storage space. The Studio doubles as an additional bedroom and includes an en-suite toilet and shower room with a marble floor and black terrazzo washstand.

The adjacent building, across the lotus pond, holds the Study, with a flat screen satellite TV, DVD player and a quality sound system for the entertainment of the guests. This room also doubles as an additional bedroom with an en-suite shower room and a stone terrace that appears to almost float within the gently swaying fields of ric e. Cushioned seating is built into the low wall encircling the terrace, thereby creating a comfortable place for relaxing with a book while enjoying a coffee or a cocktail at sunset. A cathedral window in the Study room overlooks the main living and dining area on the lower level, which is accessed by an external cantilevered staircase.

It is upon reaching this lower level that visitors will be able to fully appreciate the unique design of the villa. The gargantuan, 12 x 8 metre, living and dining pavilion extends the full height of the building and features a marble floor underneath a vaulted roof supported by coconut-wood pillars on stone plinths. Furnished with rattan chairs and sofas, pendulous steel globe lanterns and Buddhist welcome statues, this pavilion represents open living at its very best, and is a fantastic venue for parties, receptions and functions. A small aviary is situated to one side, and a large hatch links the dining area with the fully equipped kitchen, where the cook will prepare a range of delicious Indonesian and Western meals . Next door is a toilet and a shower, and the laundry and staff quarters are situated at the back. The adjoining semi-circular timber deck overhangs the lush river valley and provides an alternative romantic dining area. Living jackfruit trees grow through holes that have been cut in the floor of the deck, creating a solution that blends style with nature without threatening the environment. A further example of environmental conservation is the water recycling system that has been devised for the 8 x 3 metre infinity edge swimming pool, the outdoor Jacuzzi, and the graceful cascade flowing down from the lotus pond above. Another Buddha statue rests within an alcove behind the cascade.

The Guest Room is situated at pool level, within the building that houses the Master Bedroom and Studio. Furnished with a dreamy four-poster bed, the Guest Room features a Palimanan stone floor, windows with sliding doors facing the valley, a dressing room, and a garden bathroom with a black terrazzo tub, shower and toilet.

Rustic stone steps lead down from the swimming pool to the lowest level, past an outdoor shower, a bed of beautiful white peace lilies, and a small lotus pond contained within a stone pot. At this level there is an open terrace overlooking a grassy meadow within the valley. Another wooden deck juts out to one side and a narrow path leads down to the river past a small temple and a coconut grove. On one side is a secret sanctuary, a traditional open pavilion, known as a ‘balé’, with a thatched roof and a raised teak floor scattered with cushions for relaxing. Even here, guests can enjoy music from the sound system, which boasts eight speakers directed towards every corner of the property. On the other side, a fully equipped gym provides the facility to maintain a daily fitness routine while appreciating the wonderful views.

The Master Bedroom, Guest Room, Studio and Study each feature individually controlled air-conditioning units and powerful ceiling fans to keep the rooms pleasantly cool. There are .telephone lines for IDD calls and in-house calls in each room, and also safety deposit boxes. At night the villa takes on a different persona, with cleverly concealed lighting. Guests will appreciate the fresh cool air, and will be serenaded by a chorus of frog song to the accompaniment of ritual music from the village temples and the constant murmur of the river.

There is a barbeque terrace at the front of the villa beside the ric e fields and parking space for up to six vehicles. Due to the steep hillside elevation, the villa is not recommended for disabled people or young children.

Location
Villa Vajra is situated in the quiet traditional village of Sebali in the dist ric t of Kaliki, an hour and fifteen minutes’ drive from Ngurah Rai international airport, and about ten minutes’ drive from the cultural town of Ubud. This remarkable town is Bali’s centre for fine arts, dance and music, and the surrounding villages are home to Bali ’s most accomplished painters, dancers, musicians and carvers. It is located 300 metres above sea level in the foothills of the central mountain range; this gives it a fresher, more pleasant climate than the southern coastal regions. The numerous art galleries in Ubud display traditional and modern work; the museums showcase the island’s ric h history, and the shops and the market stalls sell handicrafts, jewellery, woodcarvings, textiles, paintings and antiques. There are many, well-presented, cultural performances staged in the town, in particular the Hindu epic, the Ramayana; also the Kecak Dance, the Fire Dance, the Monkey Dance and the Legong Dance. The countryside around Ubud is particularly beautiful, with an abundance of trails offering memorable walks through the peaceful ric e fields. The location is convenient for tours all over the island and is only a forty-minute drive from the coast.

Located just five minutes’ drive from the cultural town of Ubud, Villa Sawah appears to float upon the rice fields from which it takes its name. The two-bedroom property, complete with swimming pool, is built on 4000 square metres of land and was designed by the acclaimed architect, Guy Morgan; modelled on the traditional Dayak longhouses of Kalimantan, it was inspired by a neighbouring granary building.

All rates are net / villa / night, inclusive of applicable government tax, service charge, refreshing welcome drinks upon arrival and return airport transfers. Rates do not include breakfast.

The villa is approached from the village of Penestanan. A 100-metre private pathway, bordered by a hedge of sleepy red hibiscus, brings visitors through the rice fields to a timber walkway leading to the front door. Flanked on one side by the tree-lined Wos River valley, the infinite 270-degree vista is unbroken by fences; and Bali’s revered volcano, Mt Agung, is visible on clear days. In traditional longhouse style, the property is constructed upon a raised platform one metre above ground level, ecologically designed around nature to preserve the contours of the land and allow animals and water to pass underneath. A further acknowledgement to the traditions of an ancient culture is the presence of a pair of hand-carved guardian statues at the entrance, while Indonesian timbers, clean lines, tactile contemporary furnishings and a soothing palette of colours make for an effortless and relaxed style.

Folding louvred teak doors and French windows provide the daily option of converting the longhouse into an open pavilion. The fan-cooled lounge and dining area is in the centre of the house, furnished with comfortable L-shaped cane sofas, cabinets and a shelf unit housing a satellite TV and CD player. Rustic boat-shaped lamps rest at the base of the soaring ‘alang alang’ thatched roof above a terrazzo floor, and bold red walls accentuate the modern dining table with its six coordinating chairs. The fully equipped open plan kitchen is contained within a horseshoe-shaped natural stone serving counter with adjacent walk-in pantry.

A glass door at one end of the building leads into the master bedroom suite, complete with office and bathroom. The office features practical shelving, an ample desk and a timber ceiling. The bathroom is located between the bedroom and the office, and is dominated by a large terrazzo bathtub, together with a washbowl resting upon a stand, a tiled shower cubicle, a toilet hidden within an alcove, and built-in cupboards and storage space. The air-conditioned bedroom is almost completely encompassed by three folding walls of glass, designed to maximise the panoramic rice field views. These French windows can be opened up to allow cool breezes and the sounds of nature to permeate and wooden shutters can be pulled down for privacy. The room, with its timber floor and ceiling fan, is simply furnished with a queen size bed, cane chest, stylish wall lamps and bedside tables.

The second bedroom is located at the opposite end of the house. This room also boasts floor-to-ceiling French windows on three sides, a wooden floor, a queen size bed and simple, yet immaculate, contemporary furnishings. A frosted glass door leads to the guest bathroom, which features a tiled shower cubicle, washbasin and toilet.

Located next to the kitchen and master bedroom are two raised timber external decks, ideal for relaxing in the open air. From the lounge area, a short flight of wooden steps leads down to a white Palimanan stone pool deck furnished with four trendy orange sunloungers and two large Chinese-style parasols. The private 4 x 8-metre infinity-edge lap pool appears to overflow into the rice fields and river valley. A serene Buddha statue stands at one end.

What makes Villa Sawah even more special is its proximity to nature; the surrounding countryside is particularly beautiful, with numerous trails offering memorable walks through the peaceful rice fields past teams of gregarious ducks. The area is a bird watchers paradise, abundant with Bali’s famous white herons and many other species. Guests who stay here will be provided with a unique insight into life in rural Bali, witnessing time-honoured methods of agriculture and tasting the produce of the land. The peaceful setting is perfect for couples who simply want to relax, or perhaps an artist or writer who might be looking for a tranquil retreat that is nevertheless only a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Ubud. The flat lawn at the front of the villa is well lit at night and is ideal for a small function; the staff quarters are located to one side.

The remarkable town of Ubud is Bali’s centre for fine arts, dance and music. There are many art galleries in the town displaying traditional and modern work; the museums showcase the island’s rich history, and the shops and the market stalls sell handicrafts, jewellery, woodcarvings, textiles, paintings and antiques. There are many, well-presented, cultural performances staged in the town, in particular the Hindu epic, the Ramayana; also the Kecak Dance, the Fire Dance, the Monkey Dance and the Legong Dance. The location is convenient for tours all over the island and is only a forty-minute drive to the coast and an hour and fifteen minutes’ drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Like many others, we fell in love with the ‘Island of the Gods’ and her people and feel very privileged to have been able to lease from the local owners, the land on which to build this peaceful haven.

The Location
Villa Awang Awang is a 50 minutes drive from the airport and is situated in the cool highlands 5km from Ubud – famous for its fine art galleries, restaurants and rich cultural life. The 10 minute drive is through stunning scenery of lush ricefields, mountains and the sacred volcano Gunung Agung towering in the distance.

The House
The villa is designed by Balinese architect Ir. Ida Bagus Wiadnyana according to ancient traditions with the correct alignments toward the Holy Mountain. Traditional materials are used throughout to harmonize with the environment – alang alang thatched roofing, hand-made terracotta floor-tiles, stone and marble, all crafted by local artists. The house is cooled by fans and natural cross breezes over water gardens. Entry is via the traditional Balinese gate-way protected by stone guardians and along a garden path through tranquil lotus and water-lily filled fish ponds. Antique Javanese doors open onto the main living area with its soaring alang alang roof and spectacular views from the open terrace.

Bedrooms
Antique Javanese doors open from the living area to three bedrooms. The main bedroom contains a queen-sized bed made from old teak wood and an antique Javanese batik table. A dressing room leads to the marble bathroom and outdoor garden shower. The second bedroom has an antique Javanese queen-sized bed while the third contains two single beds. A large terrazzo and marble bathroom with a deep tub, outdoor shower and double vanity is shared between the two rooms.

Lower Level
Stairs lead down to the open dining-area, with views across the lush valley. The dining table is constructed from sections of an antique Javanese house and comfortably seats up to 10. The kitchen has granite bench-tops and is well equipped with a refrigerator, oven, gas cook-top and modern appliances and utensils. Antique Javanese doors lead to the fourth bedroom which contains a queen-sized bed and a marble/terrazzo en-suite. Sliding glass doors open onto the terrace.

Bottom Level
Steps lead down to the sun-deck and the infinity edge swimming pool with its stunning backdrop of tropical forest.

Furnishings
The house contains many unique pieces of antique furniture from Java and Lombok and is decorated with traditional weavings, carvings, statues and antique shadow puppets. There is a television, CD player, VCR, DVD and a small collection of CD’S and books.

Night Life
World-famous music and dance performances, jazz cafes and fine restaurants are just 10 minutes away – at the villa we can only offer you the sounds of nature, the cascading river, frogs croaking, crickets chirping and the scent of frangipani and night jasmine. Due to the open plan of the house, you may see the glimmer of a fire-fly, hear the call of our beautiful blue and pink spotted Tokay who resides in the roof or receive the occasional visit from a frog. If you are not ‘creature-friendly’ this may not be the place for you.

The Village and Staff
The villa is part of the village of Melayang and our guests are always warmly welcomed at the many temple ceremonies. Staff can assist you with the sarong and sash required to attend ceremonies. As in all Balinese houses, the Gods have their home within our home. Every morning our local priest presents offerings to the Gods both inside the house and at the various house temples in the garden. All our staff are from Melayang or the adjacent village of Bintang Kuning, (Yellow Star.) They are also accomplished carvers, painters and musicians.

All rates are quoted in USD, subject to 15% government tax & service charge, inclusive of refreshing welcome drinks upon arrival, daily breakfast, and airport pick-up service. Long term and last minute rates are available upon request.

Elegant teak furniture is complemented by clean lines, natural colours and local artwork. A sizeable, open-air lounge and dining terrace overhangs the jungle, creating a real feeling of space. Villa Alamanda presents tropical living at its best.

The property is built on the side of a hill; the living area and bedrooms are all on the same level with steps leading down into the garden. A large gate opens onto a paved parking area, where indigenous ‘serai’ stone walls portray a jigsaw of shapes. Timeworn statues of comical characters greet the guests as they step into the cool interior of the villa through a set of antique double doors. Inside, the hallway extends towards a T-shaped wooden terrace. Furnished with antiques, this breezy open-air living area runs the length of the house and boasts a delightful dining section that just out over the tranquil gardens as they tumble into the steep ravine.

The garden and pool area provide the perfect spot for relaxation. The garden is equipped with a large bale with plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the afternoons in luxurious style. The garden area is large enough for children play or for you to entertain friends.

Villa Alamanda is located in Ubud
An hour and fifteen minutes’ drive from Ngurah Rai international airport, Ubud is Bali’s centre for fine arts, dance and music; while the surrounding villages are home to Bali’s most accomplished painters, dancers, musicians and carvers. This remarkable town is encompassed by magnificent terraced rice fields, rivers, traditional villages, art and craft communities, ancient temples and palaces. It is located 300 metres above sea level in the foothills of the central mountain range; this gives it a fresher, more pleasant climate than the southern coastal regions.

The numerous art galleries in Ubud feature traditional and modern work; the museums showcase the island’s rich history, and the shops and the market stalls sell handicrafts, jewellery, woodcarvings, textiles, paintings and antiques. There are many, well-presented, cultural performances staged in the town, in particular the Hindu epic, the Ramayana; also the Kecak dance, the fire dance, the monkey dance and the Legong dance. The countryside around Ubud is particularly beautiful, with an abundance of trails offering memorable walks through the peaceful rice fields. The location is convenient for tours all over the island and is only a forty-minute drive from the coast.

Accommodations
Each of the four bedrooms features red-hued hardwood floors, double sliding glass and louvre doors that open onto the terrace, en-suite bathrooms, fitted wardrobes and safety deposit boxes.

The ‘Master Bedroom‘ is furnished in a contemporary style, enhanced by a bell jar ceiling lantern, Indonesian artefacts and paintings by local artists. Louvre doors lead into a dressing room, fitted with a chunky marble washbasin and teak cabinets and adjacent to the bathroom, with its marble bathtub and shower. The glassless windows in the bathroom allow the cool breezes to permeate, and provide lovely views of the main garden area and swimming pool bordering the river valley.

The ‘Red Room‘ is characterised by red accessories such as the lamps and paintings; and the ‘Cinnamon Room’ by the spicy-scented cinnamon stick arrangement in the vase above the bed. Both of these bedrooms feature a private garden bathroom with a marble bathtub surrounded by walls and leafy shrubs.

A separate thatched pavilion houses the ‘Garden Suite‘, a cosy bedroom that also doubles as air-conditioned lounge containing shelves of DVDs and books. The Garden Suite features an en-suite garden bathroom with a canopied bathtub.

A fully-equipped kitchen is behind the Garden Suite and is accessible from the car-parking area. There is so much attention to detail; even the water tower is decorated with fanciful carved flowers, dragonflies and birds.

An arched gateway with rustic Balinese doors marks the entrance to the beautiful garden, accessed by a dramatic flight of seventeen stone steps leading down from the car-park level. The garden is shaded by verdant jungle foliage and filled with an abundance of brightly coloured, sweet-scented tropical flowers and plants. A gnarled frangipani tree overhangs the enticing swimming pool; the water appears to cascade over the curved infinity edge into the backdrop of banana plants, bamboo, and towering coconut palms. A large relaxation gazebo, known as a ‘Bale Bengong’, is situated next to the pool and offers the comfort of cushioned daybeds. Sunloungers are positioned on the white Palimanan stone patio; hand-carved paras stone statues and garden lamps create a romantic ambience. The constant sound of the fast flowing Petanu River, as it carves its way through the steep gorge below, is accompanied by the melody of birdsong and cicadas.

Villa Alamanda is an ideal choice for those looking for modern luxury in peaceful surroundings; an enchanting retreat where guests can enjoy a relaxing experience with personalised service.
